Coaching Tips for Legal Interview Success

Interviewing for a legal role? Preparation goes far beyond reviewing your resume.

Whether you’re a seasoned attorney or a legal support professional, your ability to communicate clearly, think strategically, and align with firm culture is just as important as your credentials.

Here are a few coaching tips I often share with candidates preparing for legal interviews:

  • Know your audience. Research the firm, their practice areas, recent cases, and the interviewers’ backgrounds. (Check Chambers, Law360, or firm press releases.)
  • Use the STAR method. Legal employers appreciate clear, specific examples. Structure responses around Situation, Task, Action, and Result.
  • Prepare your own questions. Great candidates interview back. Ask about team structure, billable expectations, mentorship, or firm values.
  • Be mindful of tone. Confidence is important, but so is professionalism and humility—especially in legal settings.
  • Follow up. A thoughtful thank-you note can leave a lasting impression.

Coaching truly makes a difference—and recruiters can provide invaluable insight, especially when we know the client well. We can help candidates understand not just what’s on paper, but what the firm or company values in a hire.

If you’re in the market and want to put your best foot forward, I’m happy to help.
